Most holiday drinks are either too sweet, too weak, or too much work. This one is none of those things.

Southern style mulled wine starts with a bottle of dry red wine, a 20 oz bottle of Coca-Cola Classic or Dr. Pepper, warm spices, and a slug of rum or Fireball that goes in right before serving. It's bold, warming, slightly sweet, and exactly what a cold December night calls for.

The mulled cider variation swaps the wine and cola for apple cider — same method, completely different direction, equally excellent.

Both versions simmer for anywhere from 15 minutes to a couple of hours. The longer they go the deeper they get. And the whole house smells like the holidays the entire time.


Why This Works

Dry red wine instead of sweet wine keeps the base from going cloying. The Cola or Dr. Pepper adds sweetness, carbonation that cooks off during simmering, and a subtle caramel depth that plain sugar can't replicate.

Whole spices simmered in liquid rather than ground spices produce a cleaner more aromatic result. Ground spices turn the drink muddy and leave residue in every glass.

The rum or Fireball goes in at the end — not at the beginning. Alcohol added too early boils off during the long simmer. Adding it 10 minutes before serving preserves the warmth and the kick.

Southern Style Mulled Wine

Ingredients:

  • 1 bottle dry red wine — nothing fancy
  • 1 20 oz bottle Coca-Cola Classic or Dr. Pepper
  • 3 star anise pods
  • 12 whole cloves
  • 3 cinnamon sticks
  • 1 orange, sliced
  • 2 to 4 tablespoons brown sugar or maple syrup to taste
  • ½ cup rum or Fireball — optional for a kick. If using Fireball omit the cinnamon sticks unless you love extra cinnamon

Instructions:

In a large pot combine the wine, soda, star anise, cloves, cinnamon sticks, orange slices, and 2 tablespoons of sweetener.

Bring to a slow simmer — do not boil. Let it cook gently for 15 minutes up to a couple of hours. Stir occasionally to make sure the sugar dissolves. Taste every so often and adjust sweetness and spice level.

Once ready remove the whole spices and set aside until serving.

About 10 minutes before serving stir in rum or Fireball along with any additional sweetener if needed.

Serve warm in mugs or heatproof glasses garnished with orange slices or cinnamon sticks.


Mulled Cider Variation

Substitute apple cider for the cola and red wine. Same slow simmer method. Same spices. Same spirit finish.

The cider version is slightly sweeter and more approachable for guests who don't drink wine. Both versions work equally well for a holiday party — make one or make both and let people choose.


Red Boss Punch — For a Crowd

Ingredients:

  • 1 bottle red wine, 750 ml
  • 1 bottle whiskey, 750 ml
  • 2 liter bottle ginger ale
  • 1 liter club soda or 1 quart still water
  • ½ cup maple syrup
  • ½ cup fresh lemon juice
  • ¼ cup Angostura bitters
  • Lemon slices and fresh mint for garnish

Instructions:

In a large punch bowl or clean cooler combine all ingredients with plenty of ice. Stir thoroughly to fully incorporate the maple syrup.

Add lemon slices and fresh mint for aroma and presentation. Serve over ice with a lemon wheel.

Keep everything cold before combining — wine, whiskey, and soda chilled. Only the maple syrup can be at room temperature. Chilled ingredients mix faster, taste brighter, and make this punch party-ready in minutes.


Holiday White Russian

Simple, festive, and built for one.

Ingredients per serving:

  • 1 oz vodka
  • 1 oz Kahlúa
  • 2 oz milk or cream for a richer version
  • Cinnamon for a festive finish

Instructions:

Fill a glass with ice. Pour in vodka and Kahlúa. Top with milk and stir gently. Finish with a light dusting of cinnamon for a warm holiday aroma in every sip.

For a creamier version use half-and-half or heavy cream. The cinnamon isn't just for looks — it adds warmth that makes this feel like a holiday drink instead of just a cocktail.
